Description
ADELINE HORNBECK homestead built in 1878, Florissant, Colorado. ADELINE HORNBECK (1833-1905) was not a typical homesteader. In the 1870s, after the loss of her husband and home, this single mother of 4 moved her family to the Florissant valley. At a time when women had few opportunities to own property, she filed a claim to homestead 160 acres here. Within 7 years, Adeline had built a sizable house and 9 buildings, and had acquired
$4000.00 worth of livestock. On top of daily work of homestead chores and raising children, she added a job at the general store in Florissant. The word florissant is French for Flowery or full of flowers. It comes from the Latin root Flor meaning flower. DSC 8594 D800
